AI INTEGRATION STRATEGY

The UK prime minister's AI plan promises to revolutionise public services, with emphasis on healthcare efficiency. This initiative urges local councils to consider AI-driven solutions for service improvement while navigating regulatory landscapes. Striking a balance between innovation and safety remains crucial for local decision-makers shaping their communities' futures.

Hi, I'm Eshe, an Adult Social Care Advisor at Agilisys Transform with 8 years as a Social Worker and Manager. I've worked across Mental and Physical Disability Teams, empowering vulnerable adults to achieve their goals. At Agilisys, I’m combining my passion for social care with innovative AI solutions to enhance efficiency and create more time for meaningful, impactful support. I’m excited to shape a more connected and compassionate future for social care!

Social work is a profession built on relationships, trust, empathy, and understanding. Yet, over time, the increasing weight of bureaucracy has pulled focus away from the human connections that define the work. While some degree of documentation and administration is necessary for accountability, the sheer volume of these tasks has left many social workers feeling overburdened and disconnected from the heart of their roles.

In my own experience, I found it challenging to juggle the demands of note-taking, typing assessments, and meticulously recording every phone call or meeting. These tasks often consumed nearly 80% of my time, leaving little room for the face-to-face engagement that truly makes a difference. I didn’t become a social worker to fill out endless forms, I became one to connect with people, to be present in their struggles and triumphs, and to offer support that truly meets their needs.

When I discovered the potential of AI tools that can transcribe and draft assessments in minutes, I felt a surge of hope. Imagine a world where we could spend less time on paperwork and more time sitting across from someone, fully present and focused on their story. Of course, technology must support, not replace the human element. By embracing innovations that ease our burdens, we can reclaim the time and energy to do the work that drew us to this field in the first place.

AI GOVERNANCE

The integration of AI into public services offers transformative potential but requires careful navigation to ensure public trust. AI can drive efficiencies, improve decision-making, and deliver more personalized services. However, challenges around transparency, fairness, and accountability remain central to its adoption.

Local authorities play a pivotal role in establishing trust by demonstrating ethical AI use. This involves clear communication about how AI is deployed, ensuring inclusivity, and addressing public concerns over data privacy and bias. Engaging with communities, embedding strong governance frameworks, and sharing success stories are vital steps toward fostering confidence.

As the use of AI in public services grows, collaboration and dialogue between public sector organizations, technologists, and citizens will be critical to achieving sustainable and trusted AI integration.

SEND PRESSURES

A new report from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has issued a stark warning about the sustainability of the SEND system in England. Without urgent reform, thousands of children risk missing out on the support they need, while nearly half of local authorities face severe financial pressures that could push them to the brink of bankruptcy within the next 15 months. The report highlights widespread challenges, including inconsistent support, rising demand, and an unsustainable funding model that requires immediate attention.

COUNCIL BUDGET CHALLENGES

Argyll and Bute Council encounters a record budget shortfall, sparking a survey to prioritise essential services. Despite achieving £50m in savings over a decade, a £14.9m deficit remains, even with additional governmental funding. Public input is crucial for strategic decisions amidst inflationary pressures and constrained financial adaptability.

CYBER DEFENCE STRATEGY

The £13 million framework by Scotland Excel aims to fortify cyber defences of Scottish councils through a security operations centre. This strategic investment targets consistent security enhancement and operational efficiency. By offering 24/7 monitoring and fostering a unified skill set, it strategically addresses growing cyber threats, demanding immediate attention and action.
