COUNCIL FINANCIAL STABILITY

Local councils face a critical financial juncture, with record numbers seeking Government aid due to escalating costs in social care and homelessness. London's boroughs combat a £500 million funding deficit, prompting tax hikes and service reductions. Councils now consider asset sales, challenging strategic decisions to maintain essential services.

GOVERNMENT TECHNOLOGY

The UK government is exploring the use of private digital wallets for storing official documents, provided vendors meet electronic ID standards. By 2025, the gov.uk wallet will launch, offering secure virtual access to driving licences, Veteran Cards, and more, aiming to simplify public service interactions.

COUNCIL FUNDING STRATEGY

Over £69 billion has been allotted for council budgets, boosting Core Spending Power by 6.8%. This allocation targets stabilisation amidst cost challenges, dedicating £3.7 billion to social care. Councils must navigate stricter council tax regulations, managing taxpayer concerns while strategising for effective service delivery within tightened fiscal parameters.

Councils across the UK are facing a growing challenge: the number of EHCPs is increasing, but resources aren't keeping pace. This leads to backlogs, delays, and increased pressure on your team. In 2023, less than half of all new EHCPs were issued within the 20-week statutory timeframe.

The Agilisys EHCP Agency allows councils to focus on what matters – providing high quality support for children. This is achieved by:

  1. Reducing backlogs and improving timeliness: The agency's AI-powered EHCP Drafting tool automates draft creation, saving an average of 5 hours per plan. This allows for faster processing of EHCPs, helping councils meet the 20-week statutory timeframe and reduce backlogs,.

  2. Improving accuracy and consistency: The EHCP Drafting tool ensures consistency and accuracy in plan development, minimising errors and reducing the need for revisions.

  3. Enhance outcomes: By streamlining processes and reducing backlogs, the agency ensures children and young people can access the services and provisions outlined in their EHCPs faster.

COUNCIL FINANCE

Warrington councillors are warned that Donald Trump's tariff policies may lead to inflation, affecting the UK economy. The council's 2025-26 treasury management strategy discusses the impact of US policies on UK gilt yields. This underscores the significance of geo-political developments on local financial planning.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT FUNDING

The allocation of an extra £144m by the Scottish Government provides crucial support against the UK's National Insurance increase, directly affecting councils. Finance Secretary Shona Robison stressed the inadequacy of the Treasury's compensation. The Budget is designed to avert steep council tax hikes, enhance public sector investment, and implement progressive tax policies.

Hi, I'm Eshe, an Adult Social Care Advisor at Agilisys Transform with 8 years as a Social Worker and Manager. I've worked across Mental and Physical Disability Teams, empowering vulnerable adults to achieve their goals.

Social work is a dynamic and rewarding field where no two days are the same. Social workers work with a number of people at any one time. This is often referred to as a caseload and involves a great deal of adaptability and multitasking. We balance direct support, collaboration with other professionals, and administrative tasks, all while responding to new challenges and making a meaningful difference in people's lives.

A day in the life of a social worker is a dynamic mix of the following tasks:

  • Organising and Planning

  • Meeting with Residents: The Core of Social Work

  • Collaboration and Teamwork

  • Crisis Intervention and Urgent Situations

  • Administrative Tasks and Case Documentation

This balance of hands-on care and essential behind the scenes work makes social work both challenging and rewarding.

I have been trialling Agilisys’ NoteTaker Tool and can already see its usefulness in completing paperwork. If I had used this tool while managing a caseload, it would have saved me significant time on administrative tasks, such as typing up assessments and recording meetings. An assessment that typically takes between 1.5 hours and half a day to complete (depending on the social worker and case complexity) can have a first draft completed in just 15 minutes. This efficiency could help prevent burnout by making the workload more manageable and freeing up time for other important tasks.
